2008 Fuel Surcharge
Hi Everyone,
I just want to touch bases with everyone and answer a few questions regarding the current fuel crisis that has us all by a tight grip.
We set our rates each year in November for the upcoming season. The past few seasons we have had to surcharge for fuel due to the volatility of the market. In past years we have set a “one price fits all” per day surcharge. This seemed to work out, but as you can imagine, as we set this surcharge rate and fuel adjusted upward we typically fell short trying to accomplish what we set out to do in the first place, offset the escalating cost of operation.
This season, in an attempt to remain as fair as possible with our customers and maintain some level of profitability, we have adopted a formula that I believe to be fair and reasonable to our customers.
Our 2008 rates were based on diesel fuel that cost $3.00 per gallon. Currently, as of this writing, diesel fuel stands at $4.90 per gallon.
For our charter trips we will assess a fuel surcharge daily based on the amount of gallons burned per day, multiplied by the dollar cost of diesel fuel over $3.00, divided by the number of anglers onboard.
It is important to me that Coral Sea customers receive the fairest possible method of surcharge and I believe this to be the most accurate method. Some trips may fish further, expending more fuel, and yet others may fish closer depending upon the current position of targeted fish.
So that you may better prepare yourself and your group, on average, worse case scenario, we expend 300 gallons of diesel fuel fishing a range of approximately 70 miles on a 1-day trip. Again, this amount may vary, plus or minus 50 gallons, depending on conditions, etc.
We will “stick the tanks” at the end of your trip and assess our usage and surcharge accordingly. The current price of fuel will be available upon request.
For our open party trips the only way we can set our fuel surcharge is still on a per person basis. This should be a fair method as all of our customers will be paying the same rate and at the end of the year it is my hope that our fuel increase will come close to being covered. Our 2008 fuel surcharge for open party trips are set as follows:
1.5 day - $35
2 day - $50
We realize that an increase in fare is unwelcome; there is no way for any of us to forecast oil prices given the current state of this most volatile market.
It is our goal to provide the fairest possible pricing for Coral Sea customers and we simply ask your patience and understanding as these cost increases are the result of economic factors beyond our control.
Sincerely,
Frank T. Ursitti

03-03-2008 Rockfish Season Opens With Limits
We fished the season opener on March 1st with 20 anglers and came back with 200 nice rockfish. We had some adverse weather conditions, the wind was really blowing, but our anglers stuck to the rail and were rewarded with some very good fishing. We didn't get to fish some of our normal spots because of conditions but we still had a good trip. We picked up some really nice fish.
Unfortunately we had to turn some reservations away for fishing on Sunday, the wind just took over.
We'll be heading out again next weekend, fishing on Saturday and again on Sunday. Hopefully we'll have improved weather then and we'll get to fish some our spots we missed last weekend. We'll be looking forward to more good rockfish action along with some lingcod, whitefish, and other species. Everybody likes to come home with a mixed bag.
Come join the fun!

02-26-2008 Rockfish Season Set to Open!!
This is what we've been waiting for, rockfish season is finally going to open. Now we can fish for all the species in the area, no more catch and release restrictions.
We're going to be running overnight trips for rockfish and any other fish we can locate. We'll be running regular trips departing on Friday nights and again on Saturday nights. Check out our trips page for our complete schedule.
Rockfish are some of the best table fare in the ocean and if fishing is good you can literally load up your freezer. Come out and enjoy some good fun and help us catch a boat load.

02-11-2008 Time has been flying. It's hard to believe but the Tuna season is just four months away and now is the time to start planning your summer trip with us. We've had three down years of fishing in a row and if you listen to the old Portuguese Captains (some of the best fisherman on the water)three down years are always followed by a great Tuna season. We're looking forward to some really good fishing this year.
We're starting to take charter trips. Now is the time to give us a call and go over our calendar to find the best dates available for your charter group. We have some good news for charter groups: NO PRICE INCREASE FOR 2008. That's right, we've held the line on prices this year making the Coral Sea an even better value.
For all of our open party anglers we're going to offer nine 1.5 day trips this year. These trips are all inclusive: bait, bunk, Mexican permit, meals, and snacks. These 1.5 day trips will have just 17 anglers on board. Come out and make some friends with a small group of anglers. We've increased the price of these trips this year a mere $5.
Back for 2008 are our popular Ultra Limited Load 2 day trips. We take just 14 anglers to give you a great fishing experience. We have several Sunday -Monday trips available along with two Saturday-Sunday trips in September and another Saturday-Sunday trip in October. And of course, these trips are all inclusive also. Some more good news on rates: NO PRICE INCREASE FOR 2008 on our 2 day trips.
Whether you're looking for a charter or an open party trip on a mid-size boat with an experienced, friendly crew you need to check out the Coral Sea. Give us a call at 619-997-9993 and we'll go over all the details of the boat, the crew, our schedule, and the open dates available. You're going to enjoy your trip aboard the Coral Sea.
We'll see you on the water.

10-17-2007 Well, we've left San Diego and returned to Oxnard where we will be running fishing trips and marine laboratory trips out of Channel Island Sportfishing.
The Tuna season out of San Diego this year was only so-so. We had some very good trips, especially on the multi-day trips. We also had some rather poor fishing. The Albacore were spotty and the autumn Dorado and Yellowfin didn't really kick off except for 1.5 day trips and longer. I guess that's why it's not called catching.
We try hard to put fish on the boat on every trip. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and we look forward to seeing you again out of San Diego next year.

09-20-2007 Albacore Still Biting!!
We just came back from a great trip. We had 15 guys on a 1.5 day trip and we caught 66 really nice Albacore. That's just a little shy of limits for our guys. Just a few less break-offs and we would've limited out. The Albacore continue to be in the 20 - 30 pound range.
The weather was nice. After a few days of stormy weather the seas flattened out and the Albacore bite turned on. I know we keep saying this but this is some of the best late season Albacore fishing in a long time. We're almost at the start of autumn and Albacore fishing is still very good. You really need to get in on this action if at all possible. Multi-day trips are the best bet for good numbers of fish but the overnight boats are scoring too.
Our next open party trip is a 2 day departing Friday October 5. The price is $495 and is all inclusive.
If you can't make it out on the Coral Sea check out the Ranger 85's schedule. There are several open party trips available during the week and over the weekends.
Call us at 619-997-9993 for information and reservations.
Here's to good fishing.

09-05-2007
The late summer Albacore bite continues. In fact, this is the best September Albacore fishing in a long time. And, the quality of the fish is excellent. 20 -30 pound Albies are the norm.
Right now these fish are about 100 miles out, around the Cortez bank. That makes it hard for the over night boats to reach them but it's no problem for multi-day trips. Our other boat, the Ranger 85, came back to the dock this morning with 104 Albies for 25 guys. I'm sure there were several break-offs too. Now that's some good fishing.
We leave this Friday on a 2 day trip and we're confident we'll be into the fish for our 14 anglers. The next 2 day trip we have scheduled is for Sept 15-17 and we believe the good fishing conditions will remain. The trip price is $495 plus a $25 fuel surcharge. The price includes permits, meals, and even your snacks. If you want to get in on this action give us a call at
619-997-9993 to reserve your spot.

07-05-2007 Fishing this week has been outstanding. Most of the multi-day boats are coming back with LIMITS or near limits for their anglers. Good quality fish too. Lots of 20 - 25 pound fish with some down around 15 pounds and others closing in on 35 pounds. This is definitely the best fishing of the season. Weather and water conditions are excellent.
We've sat at the dock this week because we didn't have any charters and we couldn't go on-line for any open party trips. However our other boat, the Ranger 85, has been having some great fishing. LIMITS or near limits of Albacore on their 1.5 and 2 day trips this week. The Ranger is out on a 2.5 day trip now and it'll be interesting to see how many fish they come home.
Looking forqward to our charter trips this weekend and into next week the fishing should remain very good. There is a large body of Albacore out there that are biting well and the weather and seas are very fvorable. We expect these conditions to remain through the coming week.
Some of the fish are being caught on iron jigs but most are caught on live bait. Spool your reels with 25-30 pound fresh quality line. Bring some #1, #2, 1/0, 2/0, and 3/0 hooks. Flying lining the bait has been the ticket but bring along some small sinkers. It's a simple set-up to catch some quality fish.
Remember, our crew is there to make your trip the best sportfishing trip you've had.
